Charge with the compatible equipment

The CPSC advises using the charger supplied or specifically recommended by the manufacturer and following the product instructions. Plugs that fit are not proof of electrical compatibility. The wrong charger or replacement battery can create hazardous conditions.

Check the manufacturer manual for charging temperatures, permitted locations and the recommended sequence for connection and disconnection. Avoid charging damaged equipment, particularly after an impact or water exposure.

Be present, and unplug when done

CPSC guidance says not to charge when you are asleep or away. Charge in an appropriate location where the equipment remains observable and where it does not block an exit. Follow building rules for lithium-ion batteries and the manufacturer's ventilation instructions.

Do not leave a battery or charger wrapped in fabric or covered by other items that interfere with heat dissipation. Use the manufacturer's recommended surface and keep liquids and flammable clutter away from the setup.

Treat damage or unusual behavior seriously

Unexpected heat, swelling, smoke, strong odors, hissing, a damaged casing or erratic charger operation should prompt immediate caution. Stop using the product and follow local emergency and manufacturer directions. Do not attempt to open or rebuild a suspect battery.

For replacement packs or chargers, insist on model-compatible, manufacturer-approved equipment rather than third-party universal claims. The cheapest replacement may be an expensive safety mistake.

Plan battery end of life

Lithium-ion batteries do not belong in household trash or regular curbside recycling. CPSC directs consumers to appropriate battery recyclers or hazardous-waste collection channels.

Before buying any bike, ask what an approved replacement battery would cost and whether it will still be obtainable later. A clear service and replacement path is a meaningful form of long-term value.

Before you decide

  • I have the correct maker-approved charger.
  • I can charge while present without blocking exits.
  • I know whom to contact about a damaged pack.
  • I have a plan for approved replacement and recycling.
